I went to my local Kaiser today for an appointment. It’s a big, beautiful new campus. And as I waddled from our car to the elevator (I can’t take the damn stairs, Kaiser, because my kid that’s due in the next five-ish weeks is causing my sciatica AND my fibromyalgia to flare up and *I* can’t move my legs without extreme pain. So no, stairs aren’t an option for me).

But when I saw this painted on the lines of handicapped parking spaces my mouth flew open. I didn’t get a picture of the words “Why not take the stairs instead?” painted in front of the elevator that was about seven feet away from these spots.

Anyone else see how these could be problematic? Kaiser isn’t insinuating people who are handicapped don’t exercise, because I take a gentle moves aquatic class, and I am very friendly with them. But to have it painted on their parking spots basically stating that they should “walk” down several flights of stairs to the hospital campus or stating “walking is better” painted in front of some people’s only means of getting out of the parking garage, proves that there may have been a lack of foresight or thought when it came to their marketing.

I’m not really good with articulating my thoughts when it comes to ableism and body issues. I know there a lot more people out there that are smarter than I am when it comes to these issues, maybe you can back me up/set me straight?
